General information about Romania and Bucharest

Romania is located at the intersection of Central and South-Eastern Europe, bordered, on the SE by the Black Sea. Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine to the North and North-East, Moldova to the East, and Bulgaria to the South. With a surface measuring 238,391 square kilometres (92,043 sq mi), Romania is the eighth largest country of the European Union, and has the seventh largest population of the European Union with 20,121,641 people. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest - the sixth largest city in the EU.

Bucharest became the capital of Romania in 1862 and is the centre of Romanian media, culture and art. Its architecture is a mix of historical (neo-classical), interbellum (Bauhaus and Art Deco), Communist-era and modern. In the period between the two World Wars, the city's elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite earned Bucharest the nickname of "Little Paris" (Micul Paris). In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom.

Economically, Bucharest is the most prosperous city in Romania and is one of the main industrial centres and transportation hubs of Eastern Europe. The city has big convention facilities, educational institutes, cultural venues, traditional "shopping arcades" and recreational areas.

Bucharest has landmark buildings and monuments. Perhaps the most prominent of these is the Palace of the Parliament. The largest Parliament building in the world and second largest building in the world by surface, after the Pentagon in the United States, the Palace houses the Romanian Parliament (the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate), as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Another landmark in Bucharest is Arcul de Triumf (The Triumphal Arch), built in its current form in 1935 and modelled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The Romanian Athenaeum building is considered to be a symbol of Romanian culture and since 2007 is on the list of the Label of European Heritage sights

Other cultural venues include the National Museum of Art of Romania, Museum of Natural History "Grigore Antipa", Museum of the Romanian Peasant (Muzeul țăranului Român), National History Museum, and the Military Museum.

Travel requirements for EU citizens

If you are travelling from within the European Union and are an EU citizen you do not need any other documents for your travel apart from a national ID card or your passport. Please make sure they are valid and that you have them with you at all times.

Furthermore should you need help with booking a flight or if you have more inquiries regarding the schedule of the conference or any other details which may be useful in arranging your travels please do not hesitate to contact a member of our staff and we will be more than happy to help or guide you in any way we can.

Visa and travel requirements for non-EU citizens

If you are travelling from outside the EU area please note that you may require obtaining a visa before being able to travel to Bucharest.

Getting to the hotel

All participants travelling by plane will be provided a shuttle bus at the airport to transport them to and from the hotel on their arrival/departure date. The participants will be expected at the airport by one of the organizers or a member of staff from the hotel. However, in order to arrange this service we would need your travel details prior to the arrival date.

Transparency International Romania has already booked several rooms with Intercontinental Hotel, the same place where the conference is organized, therefore we can help you with the reservations. However, should you decide to book a room in a different hotel, please let us know so that, if needed, we may assist you with the reservations there and also with the transport to and fro the airport.

Accommodation

As mentioned above, rooms have been booked for all participants requiring assistance with accommodation, at Hotel Intercontinental Bucharest. The hotel is located at no 4 Nicolae Bălcescu Blv., District 1, Bucharest, Romania, metro stop: PIAȚA UNIVERSITĂȚII, the services provided include wireless internet access, breakfast.

The hotel is near the city centre and fairly close to several landmarks of Bucharest. More information on the location of the hotel you may find under Conference Venue.

Payment

Concerning the payment for the accommodation, credit card details or a deposit payment are needed upon check-in for accommodation and any other personal expenses that might arise (e.g. phone). Please be sure to settle any personal expenses that you may incur before you leave.
